| Yup, I'm updating. Nope my computer's not fixed. I'm on my brother's stolen connection. Thanks Barrett. Thanks Barrett's neighbors.
Craig Thompson. He did a graphic novel called Blankets. One of the best I've ever read. Truly, if you have ever struggled with your faith, your upbringing, your family, your first love, or your hair, you must read this book. It's as if Thompson just squeezed the essence out of every experience from preadolescence to adulthood and saturated the paper with it. It's beautiful, and poignant, and you will probably cry.
I then read his first G.N., Goodbye, Chunky Rice. Again, beautiful, a slightly more innocent and abstract work about leaving behind the friends you love so much, in search of yourself. Melancholy and sweet.
He is in the process of writing his third fiction, Habibi, which Thompson says will be an Arabian folktale of his own making. For this, he travelled to Moracco to research the culture, et cetera, and he's published his travel journal, entitled Carnet de Voyage (Travel Journal). Just finished reading it. Phenomenal.
Carnet has much the same feel as Blankets, which was also autobiographical. It felt very much like a continuation of the story a person I'd gotten to know, and very much relate to, had to tell about his life. This was written in a less explanatory way, of course, so there is a little guesswork involved in the interpretation. You are never given details about his ex-girlfriend, but he allows you glances at her condition (terminally-ill), and how much he still loves her. They still talk, and you are not told what the details of the break-up are. He notes the severity of the pain in his hand throughout the book, and midway through a woman tells him she's very concerned about his rheumatoid arthritus. If you remember that he is not writing to relate the story of himself, but just to track his journey, it's an excellent read.
And a good distraction while we wait for Habibi.

| 10. I had Monday and Tuesday off, so today's the first day of my week. 9. Brief power outages at work scared customers, and that's always funny. 8. John and I both closed, so I got to see him every now and then during work. 7. It was an overcast and slightly stormy night. 6. I got a hardcover Lenore sketchbook 10% off at Hot Topic. 5. Pat and Aaron met us at Barnes and Noble for coffee after work. 4. When we got there, Mom and Kate were there too, and we all went to Perkins for more coffee. 3. Upon pulling into the driveway for the final time tonight, Just Like Heaven came on the radio, so I just sat in the car and listened to it. 2. I've felt really, inexplicably happy today.
And the number one reason today was cool... ...I work tomorrow and Friday, then have a three-day weekend: Monday's our first anniversary!
